Have a look at this image – Landcare planted native tube stock at the Murrumbateman Recreation Ground only 15 years ago & the growth is phenomenal! Users of this green space now enjoy shade, amenity & animal habitat.
We need to increase tree canopies by 30% to cool down our urban & rural residential areas. Trees need to survive a range of climate factors: drought tolerance, frost tolerance, extreme heat tolerance, weed potential & allergen potential. Many native species will deliver these outcomes, continue to adapt & thrive in these conditions.
Murrumbateman is under development growth & many existing native trees are cleared & replaced by exotic plantings that will not survive the long term. Some great trees to plant are the kurrajong, eucalyptus (red box/white box), acacia & casuarina.
Some people have misconceptions that all eucalypts are not as cooling as exotics, dropped limbs & are more of a fire hazard. Eucalypts may not have a much shade as exotics, but they have very important cooling & climate mitigation effects, & a huge cooling effect through evapotranspiration (how water moves through the leaves & cools down).
